Dr. Robert Allen is the pioneer plastic surgeon who created many of the most popular and successful techniques used today in reconstructive procedures. He has dedicated his career to improving the lives of breast cancer survivors through innovative strategies designed to enhance both the function and aesthetic value of the breasts. Dr. Allen was a seminal innovator of the DIEP/SIEA/SGAP/IGAP/LTP flaps for breast reconstruction and founded The Center for Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction, as well as the Group for the Advancement of Breast Reconstruction.
Dr. Allen is primarily interested in autogenous breast reconstruction and microsurgery, which are among the most challenging subspecialties in plastic surgery. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, following up with a plastic surgery residency at Louisiana State University. He then embarked on an elite fellowship in microsurgery at the NYU Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Allen served as Chairman of Plastic Surgery at LSU, followed by Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at NYU Medical Center, the Medical University of South Carolina, and continues to serve as clinical professor at LSU Health Sciences Center. He travels nationally and internationally to perform autogenous breast reconstruction, as he continues innovating to shape this exciting field.
