After mastectomy, hybrid reconstruction can help ensure the most visually appealing and realistic breast mounds. Implant surgery can be combined with autologous flap techniques, which can offer the best aspects of both worlds. Dr. Zampell performs hybrid reconstruction either immediately after mastectomy, or in a two-part procedure adding implants at a second stage.
What will my recovery be like?
You will require a few weeks to recover as with any autologous surgery. The addition of an implant may require some additional healing time. Most women are able to return to regular activities and are back to work in four to six weeks, although each patient is different.
You can resume routine activities as dictated by the doctor, but it is recommended you perform gentle stretching exercises in the early weeks after your procedure to maintain a full range of motion. You may also consider hiring a helper to assist you with chores and childcare as you heal.
